Sea otters and polar bear spotlight

Meshik - Northern sea otter

Saturday's in the past, before my zoo keeping days, were filled with zoo photography. Most weekends were spent in Zoo U. class, a docent class, or working on a research project in high school with one of the snow leopards at the zoo.

Sometimes it can be nice to get back to practicing photography, setting a goal for yourself for the day. Whenever I visit Phipps Conservatory, I try to force myself to walk around with only 1 lens and my camera. This forces me to have to work with framing with what I have. I often do this with any prime lens I have, looking for different perspectives and angles. My go to lenses are telephotos and prime lenses tend to frustrate me because I am too used to the ability to focus by hand, not by my movement.

Today's goal was to use primarily my Canon 55-250mm IS telephoto lens. It is the standard telephoto that most users go to when trying to reach just a bit farther for photos. This lens is how I started out with zoo photography. I now also use a Tamron 150-500mm IS for getting closer framed shots, but today I wanted to go back to the basics.
